Mnemosyné (2011), for solo violin, is named for the Greek goddess – daughter of Gaia and Uranus, the embodiment of memory, and the mother of the nine muses. Carter’s subtitle – “Remembering my wife, Helen” – makes it clear why he chose this title, and why he maked the score “Teneramente.” The piece chronicles the conflicting emotions we all feel when we recall a departed loved one – joy at the memory of their presence in the world and pain at their absence.
